What is the Rubric feature?
The Rubric feature allows you to create a Rubric that can be completed within GoReact as you critique videos. Rubrics are completely customizable, and you can reuse them as well as share them with others in your organization.
Rubrics can contain categories of items, auto-score totals, and more. The following Rubric element types are available:
- Individual element (possible points for an item)
- Checkbox element (points earned/deducted when an item is checked)
- Numeric scale (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 rating)
- Qualitative scale (i.e. Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent)
- Text response (open text box item)
- Category and overall totals
How do I set up a Rubric?
There are three ways to create or add a Rubric:
- When you create an Activity you will have the option to add a Rubric under the Feedback panel.
Click the "+Rubric" button to open your Library. From here you can select a Rubric you have already created/used previously or you can create a new Rubric by clicking "+Add Rubric".
- You may also add a Rubric to an Activity that has already been created by clicking the ellipses on the right of the activity name. Select Edit Activity, and then click "+Rubric" button in the Activity Settings page.
- The third way to create a Rubric is by clicking the Library button on the top right corner of the Dashboard (bottom right in LMS). Select "Rubrics" and then click "+New Rubric." Note that creating a rubric this way will add it to your library for later use and won’t attach it to any previously created activity. You will still need to add it when editing the settings of an Activity as described above.
Working with Rubric elements
Once you've created a rubric template (or gone in to edit one), you'll see the Rubric canvas. The main white area is where you'll build your rubric template. On the left is a "palette" of element types that you can drag on to your canvas to customize.
You can add as many categories and individual elements as you like. If you are using it as a scoring rubric, enter the points for each element and the rubric will automatically track the overall points for you.
If you have an element you'd like to copy, such as a numeric or qualitative scale that you use repeatedly, just click the white "Copy" button at the top right corner of the element you wish to duplicate, and it will appear beneath it, ready to customize.
Previewing and saving the Rubric
At any time, you can click the "Preview" button to see how it will look in live mode for evaluations. Then click "Close Preview" to return to the editor.
Once your Rubric is complete, click "Save" and "Close." Your Rubric is saved and ready to use!
Auto-save note: Please note that the rubric editor auto-saves continuously, so you'll never lose your work.
Using the Rubric
When a rubric is assigned to an Activity, it will automatically be available to instructors and reviewers who give feedback on a video session. If a student rubric has been added, it will be available to all users in the course. (See Student Rubrics below.)
Scoring with a rubric: If you gave your activity a total points possible and added a rubric with scoring elements, the rubric score will override the points possible. Also note that if more than one reviewer completes an evaluation on the rubric, the video session score will be the average of the completed evaluations.

Editing a Rubric
To edit a rubric click the "Library" button on the top of your Dashboard (bottom right in LMS), select the "Rubrics" tab on the left, and then click the "Edit" icon on the right (You can also edit directly from your Activity Settings page). From here you can begin to make edits. Once you make your first edit, a pop up window will ask you if you want to "Apply to ALL" or "Save a New a Copy".
**Caution when changing a rubric**
Once a video has been graded with a rubric, the evaluation is permanently attached to that video. If you edit the Rubric after grading, those edits will not be applied to the rubric on any previously graded video submissions. If you find yourself in this situation you can contact Customer Support and we will remove the evaluation from the submission so your edited rubric can be applied.
You can now add student rubrics to your activities!
Here's what instructors and students need to know:
- Student rubrics allow students to evaluate their peers or themselves using a rubric provided by the instructor. This rubric can be different from the instructor rubric or it can be the same one.
- Student scores are visible to the instructor, both individually and as an averaged score.
- Students can see their own evaluations on any video submission but will only see their peers' evaluations on their own video. To encourage qualitative feedback, peer scores will not be displayed.
- Student evaluation points are not tallied with the instructor's evaluation score.
To add a student rubric to an activity, simply check the box for Self Evaluation, Peer Evaluation or both in the Activity Settings panel. Then add or create your rubric as outlined above.
Once evaluations are added to a video submission, they will be displayed in a dropdown menu on the feedback panel. Instructors will see all evaluations and scores while students will only see their own evaluations on any video they have graded. Students will also see any evaluations given by their peers on their own video submissions, though the scores will not be displayed. The icon next to each name in the dropdown list indicates whether an evaluation is from a instructor/reviewer or a peer. The graduate's cap icon is shown for non-student evaluators and the people icon is shown for students.
Can I include student rubric scores in my final evaluation?
If you would like to include student rubric scores into your final evaluation, here are a couple of options:
- Create a point element in the instructor rubric. When peer evaluations are complete, enter the average score provided in the evaluations dropdown menu.
- If you'd rather use peer scores only, enable peer evaluations and add a student rubric but don't add an instructor rubric. Then enter the average student score as the point value on the activity or weight that score with your own.
